Humidity-Resistant Curls for Summer!
It’s no secret that Curly hair and Humidity don’t always get along. Sure, the moisture is great for the health of our hair and skin, but it can leave your tresses frizzy and undefined. What’s a curly girl to do? Thankfully, the Parlor Beauty Squad has some pro tips to create beautiful curls that fight off the unflattering effects of the season’s weather.
This is Victoria. She is going to show how she uses the Be Curly family of Aveda products to help her curls be the best they can! Be Curly is a full line of hair care and styling systems that provide multiple benefits for naturally curly heads of hair; Let’s begin!
Step 1: Cleanse and Condition.
For a healthy start, we utilize the all-new Aveda Be Curly Co-Wash to gently cleanse the scalp and hair of excess oil and product build-up, without stripping the hair of its natural moisture. After the Co-Wash has been massaged into the scalp and rinsed clean, we wring out excess moisture and apply Aveda’s new Be Curly Intensive Detangling Masque. We love this mask because it helps to easily separate tangled curls and coils, provides weightless moisture and fights frizz. This masque is left in for 2-5 minutes before being rinsed with cool water. With curly hair, it is important to be gentle and delicate when prepping for styling. This starts with the proper towel drying technique. Always lightly pat-dry your hair, never rough it up in the towel! Gently squeeze out excess water, as too much water left in the hair will dilute the product and restrict its potential.
Step 2: Prep
Now we’re ready to apply our first styling aid. Be Curly Style-Prep is applied for all day frizz control, moisture, definition, and the added benefit of heat protection! We apply about 2-3 pumps for Victoria’s length and thickness of hair. Use more or less depending on how much hair you have. Once the product has been emulsified in our palms, we smooth it into the hair from the mid-shaft to the ends and finger-comb through for even distribution. Squeeze and scrunch the hair to help shape curl.
Immediately after the style-prep has been applied, it’s time for Be Curly Curl Enhancer. Curl Enhancer makes use of wheat protein that expands when the hair is wet and contracts as hair dries to tighten curls and give added definition. This curl defining creme also works to boost shine and add softness. Using a generous amount (about the size of a quarter dollar in the palm) we emulsify the Curl Enhancer to a nice whipped consistency and smooth through the strands in much the same way that the Style-Prep was applied, scrunching and squeezing the product into our hair and shaping the curl.
Step 3: Style
Now that our curl-encouraging style products have been applied, it’s time to either let hair gently air dry, or diffuse for added definition and volume. A diffuser is an attachment for the blow-dryer that softly disperses the air coming out of the nozzle so that the hair isn’t pushed around by the force of the air. This is especially important when drying curls as the added movement and roughness from the blow dryer can cause curls to lose their definition and become frizzy. When using a diffuser, work from the ends of the hair, up, picking up sections in the bowl of the diffuser and letting them sit in the hot air for about 10 seconds before moving on to the next section. Repeat this process all over, revisiting sections until about 80-100% dry.
Step 4: Finish
A light mist of Be Curly Curl Enhancing Hair Spray sets and finished the curls with flexible hold and added protection against frizz. Simply turn the nozzle to unlock, and spray 10-12 inches away from hair for an even veil of product.
When finished, Victoria is left with curls that have definition, moisture, and movement. The hair has shine without looking greasy, and her hair is not weighed down by heavy products. She can wear her curls all day without worry! Pick up the Be Curly line of hair care and styling products to achieve this easy Summer hair on your crown of curls!
